For years, I have been advocating and continuing the education of the use of Black Henna and it’s horrible outcomes. Today, even the local radio station KOMP broadcasted this story:
” Three-year-old scarred for life by henna tattoo of Bart Simpson done in Benidorm”
I think the pictures speak louder than any words I could ever use, however what they have failed to discuss in the article is that this PPD doesn’t just show up in Black Henna (or black in color) but also in Brown as well. Some artists have felt that by using brown hair dye, you get the desired natural color right away and avoid the problems of a client’s skin not absorbing good color.
The best way to avoid this is:
- Ask your Henna Artist what color is the final color;
- SMELL the henna… there is no odor to PPD and some artists are not putting the essential oils in their henna to keep cost of production down. You can smell the oils, tea tree, lavender, eucalyptus etc…
- Ask for a list of ingredients of their mud. ANY good artist should know what’s in it and where it was harvested from;
- Immediate dark stains are NOT NATURAL HENNA, and the color should take 24-48 hours for it to culminate and oxidize to its full potential. The stain should start out a very light orange to a very brilliant one BUT NOT BLACK OR BROWN;
- Report anyone you feel who is not using natural henna to the FDA and local authorities. We need to put a stop to the harm this is doing our clients, the art form and most importantly, our children!
For more information or questions regarding this, please feel free to contact me or any artist in your area listed on the Henna Tribe forums. We are all advocates for the use of NATURAL HENNA!
